Advocates Make a Difference
Mia and Karen
Karen has been Mia’s Advocate for almost five years through 16 different placements, 10 of which were out of county. Karen was the one consistent adult in Mia’s life and also served as Mia’s educational surrogate ensuring that Mia received an appropriate school placement enabling Mia to receive her high school certificate and emancipate at the age of 18.
Andrew and Tia
Tia lobbied diligently for Andrew to be returned to his mother’s care although he had been out of home for many, many years. Andrew was placed with relatives initially until his behavior necessitated a group home placement. At the group home placement, Andrew’s mother became appropriately involved and Andrew successfully completed the program. Andrew's attorney was reluctant to return him to his mother’s care due to her past behaviors but Tia worked closely with the family and felt confident that returning Andrew to his mother’s care was in his best interest. With the only other option being long term foster care, Tia felt that Andrew truly belonged with his family. Based on Tia’s recommendation, Andrew’s attorney argued for reunification. The reunification has been successful.
